Canby; A Community Profile
History

Originally home to various Native American tribes, the first white settlers arrived in the area in the 1830s. By 1870, a railroad was under construction from Portland to San Francisco, and Canby station was built in 1873. The city of Canby, named for the war hero Major General Edward R.S. Canby, was incorporated in 1893 and grew throughout the 20th century as a railroad and agricultural center.
The City Today

Canby has a population of approximately 15,000 people, and is located on a plateau bordered by the Willamette and Molalla Rivers. The Pacific Ocean is approximately 145 kilometers (90 miles) to the west, and the beautiful Cascade Mountains can be found nearby to the east. With Portland located just 40 kilometers (25 miles) to the north, and the state capital, Salem, located 48 kilometers (30 miles) to the south, Canby is a popular bedroom community for these two important cities.
Climate

Canby enjoys warm, dry summers and mild, wet winters. The average summer high temperature is 27゜C (80゜F) and the low is 12゜C (54゜F). The winters are mild, with average high temperatures of 8゜C (46゜F) and lows of 1゜C (34゜F). The average yearly precipitation is approximately 1100 millimeters (43 inches), with the bulk of that falling in December and January.
Cultural Events

Outdoor concerts, dubbed "Slice of Summer", are held during the summer on Sunday evenings in Wait Park, Canby's signature park featuring an old-fashioned gazebo. The Fourth of July sees General Canby Day, known for its parade, fireworks and traditional family festivities. In August, Canby also proudly hosts the Clackamas County Fair and Rodeo at the Clackamas County Fair and Event Center, one of Oregon's largest and most popular fairs.
Transportation

Canby Area Transit provides local bus service, and there is connecting service into Portland. The Canby Ferry crosses the Willamette River between Canby and Wilsonville seven days a week from 6:45 a.m. to 9:15 p.m. Air travel is very convenient with the Portland International Airport located just 40 kilometers (25 miles) to the north of Canby. Also, be sure to visit the Canby Depot Museum, the oldest remaining railroad station in Oregon, to learn about the area’s railroad heritage.
Education

The Canby School District educates over 5,000 students in seven schools, with two new schools set to open in 2006. The Canby Public Library is available for residents, and there are also a number of community colleges and universities nearby providing a broad range of educational opportunities.
Recreation

In addition to nearby Molalla State Park, there are more than ten parks in the city with facilities for fishing, biking, basketball, tennis, skateboarding and more. The pool at the Swim Center is open year-round with a variety of swimming classes to choose from. Additionally, the Cascade Mountains to the east and the Pacific Ocean to the west provide numerous outdoor recreation possibilities.
