In 1985, Iwamizawa signed a
sister-city agreement with the U.S. city of Pocatello, Idaho. Every summer,
roughly ten junior and senior high school students visit Pocatello for two
weeks, and a similar group of students from Pocatello travels to Iwamizawa
for a homestay exchange. Additionally, an adult delegation from each city
visits the other every five years, expanding the circle of friendship
between our two cities.
A second sister-city
agreement was established by the town of Kurisawa with the U.S. city of
Canby, Oregon in 1989. Since that time, a delegation of five junior high
school students has visited Canby each year in August. Due to the merger of
the town of Kurisawa with Iwamizawa on March 27, 2006, the sister-city
exchange is now administered by the city of Iwamizawa.
